About mixaeljones

Hello! I try to undertake a yearly challenge and write about it in a semi-witty manner. I often use twenty words when three will do. I am also a big fan of terrible puns and taking unintentionally blurry photographs of wildlife. In 2013 I tried to eat a food I hadn't eaten before each week (I got to 28!), in 2014 I attempted to seek out as many species of bird as I could in the year (I got to 201!) and in 2015 I delved head first into the world of butterflies and tried to see as many different types as possible (44!)... I've also done some belly dancing, been Father Christmas and nearly played tennis against Bjorn Borg. If any of this seems like it might be of interest, feel free to check out my blogs... Comments encouraged! Have a nice day :)

Wheat the Parents

During the year in which I tried to see as many birds as I could in the 365 days that 2014 threw at me, I came within a few minutes of seeing a Desert Wheatear on a spur of the … Continue reading

Crane’s World

The cows at work always seem to look at me like I’m a bit odd. I don’t know if they look at everyone that way, or just save it for when I’m around. I should probably explain… For the past … Continue reading

Beverly Hills Scaup

Note: This entry was written last year, but for some reason I misplaced it / my dog ate it / I left it in my other trousers / I lent it to a friend and they’ve only just returned it. … Continue reading

Cirley Valentine

I can’t quite remember how I came across it, but from somewhere, at some point, I picked up a book that itinerizes a whole year’s worth of nature-based things to do at weekends. As someone who is notoriously bad at … Continue reading

Warbler of the Worlds

As you have all (the two of you who read this blog – hello Mum and Dad!) probably noticed, I spend a lot of time outdoors. Most of this time is spent staring at wildlife through a pair of binoculars. … Continue reading

Glauc and Mindy

Well, it’s been a while…  I hope you’ve all been keeping out of trouble. Sadly, I have to start this entry with a report of the passing away of my beloved Sat-Nav.  For the past couple of years its presence … Continue reading

Ploverview

I originally wrote this entry back in March as a summing-up of my bird-spotting endeavours back in 2014 – but promptly forgot about it.  I have now rediscovered it, so have decided to share it…  I guess it’s a bit … Continue reading

Serenpipity

Well, I had got to the final day of the year and I was still giving this challenge a go.  Knowing me as I do, this was surprising.  For the past 364 days I had been rummaging through hedgerows, scouring … Continue reading

Crane Man

After drawing a major blank, I was left with the inconceivable task of spotting six new species in the remaining two days of the year to get to two-hundred.  Three a day?  Not a chance.  If I’m honest, I was … Continue reading

Twite of the Navigator

Well, my Intermediate Year of bird-spotting has come to an end and, in some ways, I am glad, as it has been both physically and mentally tiring. Way back in January, when I set out to see as many species … Continue reading
